Priority of the U.S. Media

I found this picture from "The Daily Beast" to accurately portray the priorities of the media in the United States.

Sites I visit every day

My A1 favorite site is Ebay.com. I am obsessed. I don't really buy or sell much, but I can't bear the thought of missing out on the great deal! I go on Ebay at least once per day, usually more. I do rely on it in one respect; I use it to see what the going price of things are. I am in the market for new golf clubs right now and it is great to know that once I find the set for me, I can start competing to buy them on Ebay for a ridiculously low price.

I also visit facebook.com each day to keep up with friends. I can do with out it, but, usually don't.

I visit weather.com each day, I depend on it for the weather of course. I play golf, the weather is important.

I visit MSN more that any other site. I use it mainly for email. I have a LIVE.com account and check it many, many times throughout the day. I didn't realize how much I depended on it until the server was down one day.

Effect of the Internet on Media

With the advent of the internet, people have the ability to get news and all types of info in real time. The internet makes news reporting more efficient and wide reaching. This does not only apply to the large internet only media giants like microsoft and google, but to everyone.

Anyone can report the news now as soon as it happens. The traditional media outlets like newspapers and the nightly news on television even have parallel websites for the news. It used to be exclusive that the anchor of the nightly news or the writer in the paper would report of the days news to the masses. Now the masses can report to the mases. The information you, or anyone else has, doesn't have to wait until the morning paper or the nightly news. All types of media can be available instantly all around the world. Consumers are now also the producers and distributers of media.

Additionally, all types of media that are digitized can be copied and then distributed worldwide. It is a night mare for the people that own the copyright since they stand to loose potential sales of thier media. It is like buying a book, cd, video game, etc., and then when you are done with it, you sell it in your yardsale or give it to your friend or a family member. But, the problem is, with digital media, you can sell or give this media to everyone. The argument for the consumer is basically... Hey, I bought it and it is mine so I can do anything I want with it.

The Zoo and a 2 year old

My wife and I took our son, Carter, to the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo this weekend. It was interesting. We saw everything. To our surpise, Carter was very well behaved and in complete amazement. He is usually very high strung, bored easily and ready to move on to something else. I had read somewhere that if you talk about an upcoming trip or event with a toddler in the days leading up to it that they will actually enjoy it more. Kind of like putting a face with a name of a person you have spoken with on the phone but never seen. We talked about lions, bears, penguin(my wifes favorite) and monkeys mostly. It was strange to see that when we were at these exhibits, that he would observe very intently and then point and look at us like, "do you see the monkeys?" It is amazing how quickly they learn new things at that age. Much quicker than us adults. It would be nice to be able to learn as easily as a 2 year old.

We couldn't get him away from these goats!

How the internet changed the way people communicate...

Have you ever forgot your wallet and didn't realize it until you tried to make a purchase? Do you remember the sick feeling that you got in your stomach and the million or so split second thoughts? "Where is it?' "What did I do with it?" "Did I leave it somewhere?" "When was the last time I used it?", etc., etc., etc. It is full out panic. This is the same way I now react when I go to check my email, facebook or anything else that has to do with the internet and realize that I don't have my smartphone with a mobile network internet connection. I feel absolutely helpless. I have to get that phone or find a computer... right now! I don't believe I could go a whole day without surfing the web in some way. The reason I don't know is that I have never tried. Why would I? I have all the info., and connections that I could ever need right in my pocket. I hardly every make an actual "Phone Call" anymore unless I absolutely have to. When did all of this start? Why would rather text a message or send an email to my mom or best friend than call? It is quicker to call, isn't it?

I have hundreds of "friends" on facebook. Do I actually have that many real friends? No. Although, I do have that many acquaintances and past friends, old high school classmates, teammates, etc., though. Basically, facebook is a good way to find out what people are up to when you are bored without having to speculate and talk behind their back.

On one hand, the internet is making actual face to face human interaction obsolete. On the other, it is making human society more efficient than our predecessors could have ever imagined possible. For heavens sake, the US Postal service is about to go under due to email. It's a good thing you can't transport a package through cyberspace. About the only thing I get in the mail are flyers and general junk mail. When you go to the mail box and get the mail and you see your neighbor, the old cliche; "Nothing but bills!" doesn't really apply anymore, at least for me. I get every single bill via the internet.

As for work, I work for a world wide company and have never really ever met my boss. I don't know how he sounds. I don't know what he looks like, aside from pics I have seen on the corporate website. Email and chat are the preferred methods of communication within my company. It seems though, that this preference also applies to the rest of the world.

The Impact of the Internet on our Society

First of all, I do not like to go shopping, especially during the holidays. The internet, specifically Amazon and Ebay, have saved my life. I can just simply research, find and buy Christmas gifts. Instead of just getting gift certificates, that scream the obvious... that I didn't put any though into it, I can actually get a gift and not have to fight the crowd, find the right store or ask questions to someone that probably doesn't really know what they are talking about. To keep the gift a secret from my wife, I simply purchase a prepaid credit card and use it to pay and have the packages sent to a friends house. Of course the education aspect of the internet is affecting me because here I am, creating this blog for a college course. But, what affects me the most is the shopping and research.

Additionally, nearly all the information in the world is available on the internet; readily available at that. This gives anyone with access to the internet an almost instant answer to almost any question. In my mind, ignorance is now a less viable excuse for... well, anything. If you have a dumb question, there is no better way to get and actual answere than on the information superhighway...
